Voodoo Egg Rolls – Crispy Spicy Appetizer Recipe

Ingredients
  

Protein:

  • ½ lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • ½ lb smoked sausage, diced

Vegetables:

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small bell pepper, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • ½ cup mushrooms, chopped

Seasonings:

  • 2 tsp Cajun or Creole seasoning
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Prep Ingredients: Chop vegetables and sausage, peel shrimp, and shred cheese.
  • Cook Protein: In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until lightly browned. Add shrimp and cook until pink and just firm. Remove and set aside.
  • Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, sauté onion, bell pepper, celery, and mushrooms until tender.
  • Build Filling: Return proteins to skillet, stir in Cajun seasoning, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Add cheese and mix until melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Assemble Egg Rolls: Place ~2–3 tablespoons of filling in the center of each wrapper. Fold sides in and roll tightly, sealing edges with a dab of water.

Cook Egg Rolls:

  • Deep Fry: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry egg rolls in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
    Air-Fry (Optional): Spray egg rolls lightly with oil and air-fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crispy.
  • Serve: Slice diagonally and serve with dipping sauce. Enjoy immediately for best crunch.

Notes

  • Make-Ahead: Filling can be prepared 1–2 days in advance. Egg rolls can be assembled and frozen for later frying.
  • Vegetarian Option: Replace proteins with extra mushrooms, beans, or tofu.
