Equipment

  • Mixing bowl or stand mixer
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet or pan
  • Knife or spatula for spreading filling
  • Brush for egg wash or butter
  • Optional: dough scraper, parchment paper, cooling rack

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 ½ cups (440 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk or water
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature

For the filling:

  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced or roasted
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (optional: chives, parsley, or Italian seasoning)
  • Optional: ½ cup shredded cheese (mozzarella or Parmesan)

For finishing:

  • 1 egg, beaten (egg wash) or melted butter for brushing
  • Optional: extra herbs or cheese for topping

Instructions

  • Activate yeast: Combine warm milk/water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • Prepare dough: Mix flour, salt, butter, and egg into yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  • First rise: Cover dough and let rise in a warm place until doubled, 1–2 hours.
  • Prepare filling: Mix softened cream cheese, garlic, optional herbs, and cheese.
  • Shape rolls: Roll dough into a rectangle, spread filling evenly, and roll into a log. Cut into rolls and place on a baking sheet.
  • Second rise: Cover and let rolls rise 30–45 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake: Brush rolls with egg wash or butter. Bake 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Finish: Optional topping with herbs or extra cheese. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature ingredients for even dough and smooth filling.
  • Adjust garlic intensity according to taste; roasted garlic is milder.
  • Try variations: herb-infused, cheesy, spicy, or pull-apart loaf.
  • Rolls can be refrigerated 3–4 days or frozen for up to 2 months (wrap tightly).
  • Reheat in oven or air fryer for best texture; avoid microwaving.
