Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl
  • Pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (for garlic butter glaze)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Optional: chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  • Stir in shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Cut cold butter into flour mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Slowly add milk and beaten egg, mixing gently just until combined. Do not overmix.
  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • While baking, melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant (do not brown).
  • Brush the hot biscuits generously with garlic butter as soon as they come out of the oven.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For fluffier biscuits, handle dough gently and avoid overmixing.
  • Use cold butter to create flaky layers.
  • Sharp cheddar cheese delivers the best flavor; pre-shredded cheese with anti-caking agents melts less smoothly.
  • Garlic butter can be made in advance and reheated for convenience.
  • To freeze, cool biscuits completely, wrap tightly, and freeze up to 2 months. Reheat in oven before serving.
  • Substitute gluten-free flour and dairy-free butter/cheese for special dietary needs, though texture and flavor may vary.
