Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Wire rack (optional)
  • Foil (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Meat thermometer
  • Basting brush
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 8 chicken drumsticks
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Dry Rub (optional):

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  • Prep the Drumsticks: Pat drumsticks dry with paper towels. Season with salt, pepper, and dry rub if using.
  • Marinate: Toss drumsticks in BBQ sauce and liquid smoke. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes or overnight in the fridge.
  • Preheat Oven: Set oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top.
  • Bake Covered: Arrange drumsticks on the rack. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25–30 minutes.
  • Bake Uncovered: Remove foil and bake another 20–30 minutes, flipping halfway through. Brush with extra BBQ sauce.
  • Broil for Finish: Broil for 3–5 minutes to caramelize the glaze. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Check Temperature: Ensure internal temp reaches 165°F (74°C) near the bone.
  • Rest and Serve: Let drumsticks rest for 5 minutes before serving. Pair with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Drying the drumsticks before seasoning helps achieve crispy skin.
  • Use a wire rack for better airflow and even cooking.
  • Apply BBQ sauce late in baking to prevent burning.
  • For meal prep, freeze cooked drumsticks individually and reheat in oven.
  • Try flavor variations like honey garlic, spicy sriracha, or Asian-inspired glazes.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, coleslaw, rice bowls, or salad for a complete meal.
