  • 1 loaf brioche or French bread (slightly stale, cubed or sliced)
  • 8 oz sliced ham
  • 8 oz sliced turkey
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk or cream
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sweet Finish: Powdered sugar, maple syrup, or jam

Instructions

  • Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13-inch dish.
  • Layer Bread: Place half the bread cubes or slices in the dish.
  • Add Meat & Cheese: Layer ham, turkey, and cheese evenly.
  • Top Layer: Add remaining bread cubes.
  • Mix Custard: Whisk eggs, milk/cream, Dijon, vanilla, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour Custard: Pour evenly over bread layers, pressing gently to soak.
  • Chill: Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  • Bake: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45–50 minutes, until golden and set.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for best texture.
  • Overnight soaking ensures custard absorbs fully.
  • Don’t overbake—custard should be just set.
  • Resting after baking helps slices hold shape.
  • Customize with berries, croissants, or extra cheese for variations.
