Equipment

  • Skillet or sauté pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Airtight container (for storage)

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 2 cups sour cream (or Greek yogurt for lighter version)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (optional for richness)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (chives or parsley) for garnish

Instructions

  • Caramelize Onions: Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and sweet (about 30 minutes).
  • Prepare Cream Base: In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise (if using), garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth.
  • Combine: Fold caramelized onions into the creamy base. Mix gently until evenly distributed.
  • Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld.
  • Serve: Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with fresh herbs, and serve with chips, crackers, or vegetables.

Notes

  • Patience is key: caramelize onions slowly for maximum flavor.
  • Greek yogurt can replace sour cream for a lighter, tangier dip.
  • Not ideal for freezing—best enjoyed fresh or refrigerated.
  • Pair with ridged potato chips for the most satisfying crunch.
  • Store in an airtight container and consume within 3–4 days.
