Ingredients
  

For the Tofu:

  • 1 block (14–16 oz) extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch (or potato/tapioca starch)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 3 tbsp neutral oil (for pan-frying; less if using air fryer)

For the Aromatics:

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1–2 fresh chilies, sliced (optional)

  • Additional cracked black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Press Tofu: Remove water from tofu using a tofu press or wrap in paper towels and place a weight on top for 20–30 minutes.
  • Cut & Dry: Slice tofu into 1–1.5 inch cubes. Pat dry thoroughly to remove surface moisture.
  • Season & Coat: Toss cubes in cornstarch, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.
  • Cook Tofu:
    Pan-Fry: Heat oil in medium-high pan. Fry in small batches until golden and crispy, 3–5 min per side.
    Air-Fry: Lightly spray with oil. Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 15–18 min, shaking halfway.
  • Prepare Aromatics: Quickly sauté garlic, green onions, and chili in 1 tsp oil for 30–60 seconds.
  • Combine: Toss fried tofu with aromatics immediately after cooking.
  • Serve: Sprinkle with extra cracked black pepper, sesame seeds, or a squeeze of lime. Serve immediately.
