Equipment

  • Deep pan or fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Tongs
  • Paper towels
  • Thermometer (optional but helpful)

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow)
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs or 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying

Dipping Sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Optional: hot sauce or honey

Instructions

  • Slice Onions: Cut onions into ½-inch slices and separate into rings.
  • Prepare Coating Stations: Set up three bowls—flour/cornstarch mix, wet mixture (eggs or buttermilk), and breadcrumbs/panko.
  • Coat Onion Rings: Dip rings in flour, then wet mixture, then breadcrumbs. For extra crunch, repeat wet mixture and breadcrumb steps.
  • Heat Oil: Heat oil to 350°F (175–180°C).
  • Fry in Batches: Fry onion rings until golden and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch.
  • Drain: Place on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Make Dipping Sauce: Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard. Add hot sauce or honey if desired.
  • Serve Immediately: Enjoy hot and crispy with dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use cold batter for extra crunch.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan—fry in batches.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F for consistent crispiness.
  • Season onion rings immediately after frying.
  • Panko breadcrumbs yield the lightest, crispiest texture.
  • Best served fresh—onion rings lose crispiness if left too long.
