Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Cooling rack
  • Small whisk (for glaze)

Ingredients

For the Pastry:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled & diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (or cream)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling:

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  • Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Cook until apples soften (5–7 minutes).
  • Stir in flour to thicken. Remove from heat and cool.

Prepare the Pastry:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment.
  • Roll puff pastry into a rectangle. Place filling down the center.
  • Cut slits along both long sides of pastry and fold strips over filling in a braided pattern.

Bake:

  • Brush with egg wash.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and flaky.

Glaze & Serve:

  • Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Drizzle over cooled kringle. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • Best apples: Granny Smith for tartness, Honeycrisp for sweetness.
  • Don’t overfill the pastry to avoid leakage.
  • Let it cool slightly before glazing to prevent glaze from melting off.
  • Can substitute puff pastry with crescent roll dough for a quicker version.
  • Make ahead: Bake without glaze, cool, and freeze. Glaze after reheating.
