For the Pastry:
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
For the Apple Filling:
- 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled & diced
- 2 tbsp butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk (or cream)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Prepare the Apple Filling:
In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Cook until apples soften (5–7 minutes).
Stir in flour to thicken. Remove from heat and cool.
Prepare the Pastry:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment.
Roll puff pastry into a rectangle. Place filling down the center.
Cut slits along both long sides of pastry and fold strips over filling in a braided pattern.
Glaze & Serve:
Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
Drizzle over cooled kringle. Slice and serve.
-
Best apples: Granny Smith for tartness, Honeycrisp for sweetness.
-
Don’t overfill the pastry to avoid leakage.
-
Let it cool slightly before glazing to prevent glaze from melting off.
-
Can substitute puff pastry with crescent roll dough for a quicker version.
-
Make ahead: Bake without glaze, cool, and freeze. Glaze after reheating.
