Equipment

  • Rolling pin or flat-bottomed glass
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Frying pan or air fryer
  • Tongs or spatula
  • Knife or offset spatula
  • Optional: piping bag (for cream cheese)

Ingredients

For the Roll-Ups:

  • 12 slices soft white sandwich bread, crusts removed
  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon

For the Custard Coating:

  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk or cream
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

For Cooking:

  • Butter or neutral oil (for pan)
  • Optional: extra cinnamon sugar for coating
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, cream cheese glaze

Instructions

  • Flatten the Bread
Use a rolling pin to gently flatten each slice of bread. This helps with rolling and sealing.
  • Make the Filling
In a small bowl, mix softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of sugar and ½ tsp cinnamon until smooth.
  • Fill & Roll
Spread about 1 tsp of cream cheese mixture onto each slice, leaving a small border. Roll tightly from one end to the other, seam side down.
  • Prepare the Custard
In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and ½ tsp cinnamon.
  • Dip the Roll-Ups
Dip each roll-up quickly in the egg mixture, just enough to coat. Don’t soak.
  • Cook the Roll-Ups
Pan-Fry: Heat butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook roll-ups in batches, turning until golden on all sides (about 6–8 mins total).
Bake: Place roll-ups on a parchment-lined sheet, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15–18 minutes until golden.
Air Fry: Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes, flipping once.
  • Optional Coating
While still warm, roll in a mix of cinnamon and sugar for a crisp finish.
  • Serve
Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup or glaze. Serve warm!

Notes

  • Bread tip: Slightly stale bread works best—it holds up better when rolled and dipped.
  • Make-ahead: You can assemble roll-ups ahead and store them in the fridge overnight. Dip and cook fresh.
  • Customize it: Add Nutella, fruit preserves, or banana slices for a twist.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be refrigerated for 2–3 days or frozen after cooking. Reheat in the oven or air fryer.
  • Healthier version: Use whole wheat bread, low-fat cream cheese, or bake instead of frying.
