Equipment

  • Griddle or large skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Tongs or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Optional: baking dish (for casserole version), toaster oven (for reheating)

Ingredients

  • 6–8 cinnamon rolls (homemade, store-bought, or leftovers)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or half-and-half
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • Butter or oil for greasing skillet
  • Toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, cream cheese glaze, fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

Prep the custard:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and brown sugar until smooth.

Slice the rolls (if needed):

  • If your cinnamon rolls are large, cut them into halves or thick slices to ensure even cooking.

Soak the rolls:

  • Dip each piece quickly into the custard mixture—just enough to coat without becoming soggy.

Cook:

  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add butter or oil. Cook the cinnamon roll pieces for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden and slightly crispy.

Serve warm:

  • Plate and top with powdered sugar, warm maple syrup, cream cheese glaze, or fresh fruit. Serve immediately!

Notes

  • Fresh or leftover rolls: This recipe works beautifully with day-old cinnamon rolls as they hold their shape better when soaked.
  • Casserole version: For a baked dish, layer chopped cinnamon rolls in a greased dish, pour custard over, let sit 15–30 minutes (or overnight), then bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes.
  • Make it festive: Add orange zest or nutmeg to the custard for a holiday twist.
  • Make it indulgent: Drizzle with caramel sauce or serve with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
  • Vegan option: Use plant-based milk, egg substitute (flax egg), and dairy-free cinnamon rolls.
