Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Hand or stand mixer
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mats
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Optional: flaky sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  • Beat in maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Fold in nuts if using.
  • Scoop dough by rounded tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Optionally, sprinkle a small pinch of flaky sea salt on top of each cookie.
  • Bake 10–12 minutes, or until edges are set and tops are just firm but centers remain soft.
  • Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra chewy cookies, chill dough for 30 minutes before baking.
  • Using dark brown sugar will add a richer molasses flavor.
  • To enhance maple flavor, drizzle a little pure maple syrup over cooled cookies.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • Adjust baking time slightly for softer (less time) or chewier (more time) cookies.
