Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large skillet (for beef and aromatics)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Mandoline or sharp knife (for slicing potatoes)
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Wooden spoon/spatula
  • Oven thermometer

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 4 medium potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold), thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup milk or broth
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or Colby Jack)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prep: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook beef: In a skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Season with Worcestershire, paprika, salt, and pepper. Drain excess fat.
  • Layer: Place half the sliced potatoes in the dish. Top with half the beef mixture, half the creamy sauce (soup, sour cream, milk), and half the cheese. Repeat layers.
  • Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20–30 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden.
  • Serve: Rest 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with parsley.
  • Pro Tip: Cover with foil during the first half of baking to prevent over-browning.

Notes

  • Make-ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance; refrigerate and bake when ready.
  • Freezer-friendly: Freeze baked portions up to 1 month; thaw and reheat in oven.
  • Variations: Add bacon, swap beef for turkey, or use sweet potatoes for a twist.
  • Presentation: Serve in a rustic casserole dish with fresh herbs for cozy charm.
