Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Skillet or frying pan
  • Baking dish (9x13 inch)
  • Wooden spoon
  • Foil

Ingredients

For the Bread Base:

  • 10 cups bread cubes (white, sourdough, or cornbread)
  • 2–3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp butter

For the Flavor Trio:

  • 8 slices bacon, chopped
  • 2 large onions, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Herbs & Seasoning:

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary
  • 1 tsp sage
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare Bread Cubes: Cut bread into cubes and dry overnight or toast lightly in the oven.
  • Cook Bacon: Fry bacon until crisp. Remove and set aside, reserving drippings.
  • Sauté Onions & Garlic: In bacon drippings, cook onions until golden. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
  • Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, bacon, onions, garlic, and herbs. Season lightly.
  • Add Broth: Pour warm broth gradually, tossing until bread is moistened but not soggy.
  • Bake: Transfer to a buttered baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes for a crispy top.
  • Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley or reserved bacon crumbles.

Notes

  • Bread Choice: Sourdough adds tang, white bread gives softness, and cornbread adds sweetness.
  • Flavor Boost: Add mushrooms or apples for variation.
  • Make-Ahead: Assemble stuffing a day ahead, refrigerate, and bake before serving.
  • Texture Tip: Cover for moist stuffing, uncover for a golden, crispy finish.
