
Poisoned Apple Cider – Spooky, Delicious & Perfect for Halloween
Equipment
- Large saucepan or slow cooker
- Wooden spoon or ladle
- Heatproof mugs or glasses
- Fine mesh strainer
- Optional: small pipettes, skewers, or dry ice (for visual effects)
Ingredients
- 6 cups apple cider (fresh-pressed or store-bought)
- 2–3 cinnamon sticks
- 4–6 whole cloves
- 2–3 star anise pods
- 1–2 tsp whole allspice (optional)
- 1–2 slices fresh ginger
- 2–4 tbsp brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey (to taste)
- Optional: orange zest, vanilla bean, or nutmeg
- Optional adult version: ½ cup bourbon, spiced rum, or brandy
- Optional visual effects: red fruit syrup, lychee “eyeballs,” or small dry ice pieces
Instructions
- Pour apple cider into a large saucepan or slow cooker.
- Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, ginger, and optional spices.
- Stir in sweetener (brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey).
- Gently simmer over low heat for 20–30 minutes to infuse flavors. Do not boil.
- Remove from heat and strain out spices using a fine mesh strainer.
- Optional: add red syrup for “poison” effect or float lychee “eyeballs.”
- Serve warm in mugs, jars, or mini cauldrons.
- Adult version: stir in bourbon or spiced rum just before serving.
- For dramatic effect: drizzle syrup at the table or use dry ice safely.
Notes
- Sweetness: Adjust to taste based on cider tartness.
- Spices: Can be varied; increase cinnamon, cloves, or ginger for bolder flavor.
- Storage: Keep in an airtight container in fridge 3–4 days. Reheat gently on stove.
