A classic spaghetti meat sauce is a comforting dish loved for its hearty flavors and versatility. This recipe combines tender ground beef with aromatic onions, garlic, and a rich tomato base simmered to perfection. Whether you’re preparing a weeknight family dinner or hosting a casual gathering, this sauce pairs perfectly with al dente spaghetti, topped with a sprinkle of fresh herbs for a satisfying meal that never fails to please. Let’s dive into how to create this timeless favorite in your own kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (you can also use a mix of ground beef and pork)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400g) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (6 oz / 170g) tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking
  • Fresh basil leaves, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink, stirring occasionally to break up any clumps.
  4. Once the meat is browned, drain any excess fat if necessary.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine.
  6. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme (if using), sugar (if using), salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer, uncovered, for at least 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally.
  8. While the sauce is simmering, cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain well.
  9. Serve the spaghetti topped with the meat sauce. Garnish with chopped fresh basil leaves if desired. Enjoy!

This recipe is versatile, and you can adjust the seasonings and ingredients to suit your taste preferences.
