This homemade marinara sauce is simple to make and bursting with fresh flavors. It’s perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce!
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes (or whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand)
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Sauté the Aromatics:
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.
- Add the Tomatoes:
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes (or hand-crushed whole tomatoes), sugar (if using), dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes.
- Simmer the Sauce:
- Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Season to Taste:
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the sweetness with more sugar if needed.
- Serve:
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using. You can blend the sauce for a smoother texture if desired.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
Tips:
- Storage: Store any leftover marinara sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Customization: Feel free to add more herbs like thyme or parsley, or even some grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor.
- Serving Suggestions: This marinara sauce pairs beautifully with spaghetti, meatballs, or as a base for homemade pizza.
