Grilled Tri-Tip

Grilled tri-tip is a popular and flavorful cut of beef that’s cherished for its robust taste and tender texture. Originating from the bottom sirloin area of the cow, tri-tip is known for its triangular shape and marbling, which enhances its juiciness when grilled to perfection. Often marinated to infuse additional flavors or simply seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic, this cut is versatile and suitable for various grilling techniques. Whether enjoyed sliced thin for sandwiches, served as a hearty main dish, or featured in tacos or salads, grilled tri-tip promises a satisfying meal that showcases the rich flavors of a well-prepared beef cut.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tri-tip roast, about 2-3 lbs
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • Olive oil

Marinade (optional):

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tri-Tip:
    • If using a marinade, whisk together all marinade ingredients in a bowl. Place the tri-tip in a shallow dish or a large resealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the meat, making sure it’s evenly coated. Cover (or seal the bag) and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  2. Preheat the Grill:
    • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, around 400-450°F (200-230°C).
  3. Grill the Tri-Tip:
    • Remove the tri-tip from the marinade (if using) and let any excess drip off. Pat the meat dry with paper towels. Season generously with salt and pepper (and minced garlic if using).
  4. Grill the Tri-Tip:
    • Place the tri-tip directly on the grill grates. Grill for about 5-7 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the meat and desired doneness (medium-rare is recommended for tri-tip).
  5. Check Doneness:
    • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For medium-rare, aim for 130-135°F (54-57°C). Remove from the grill and let the meat rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
  6. Slice and Serve:
    • Slice the tri-tip against the grain into thin slices. Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as roasted vegetables, salad, or grilled potatoes.

Grilled tri-tip is deliciously juicy and pairs well with a variety of flavors. It’s a fantastic choice for a summer barbecue or any outdoor gathering. Enjoy!
