Glazed Pork Belly Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Pork Belly:
    • 2 pounds pork belly, skin scored in a crosshatch pattern
    • 1 tablespoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for searing)
  • For the Glaze:
    • 1/2 cup soy sauce
    • 1/4 cup honey or brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pork Belly:
    • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
    • Pat the pork belly dry with paper towels. Rub salt and black pepper all over the meat, including the scored skin.
  2. Sear the Pork Belly:
    • In a large, oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
    • Once hot, add the pork belly, skin side down. Sear for about 5-7 minutes until the skin is golden and crispy. Flip and sear the other side for another 5 minutes.
  3. Make the Glaze:
    • In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey (or brown sugar), rice vinegar, minced garlic, minced ginger, and sesame oil (if using).
  4. Bake the Pork Belly:
    • Pour the glaze over the pork belly in the skillet. Cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil.
    • Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 2 to 2.5 hours, until the pork belly is tender. Baste the pork belly with the glaze every 30 minutes.
  5. Thicken the Glaze:
    • Once the pork belly is cooked, remove it from the oven. Transfer the pork belly to a cutting board and cover it with foil to keep warm.
    • Place the skillet with the remaining glaze over medium heat on the stovetop. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for about 2-3 minutes until the glaze thickens.
  6. Serve:
    • Slice the pork belly into pieces and drizzle the thickened glaze over the top.
    • Serve with steamed rice, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.
