Homemade Fish Fingers Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) firm white fish fillets (like cod, haddock, or tilapia), skinless and boneless
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fish:

  • Cut the fish fillets into finger-sized strips, about 1-inch wide. Pat them dry with paper towels, and season with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder (if using).

2. Set Up the Breading Station:

  • In three separate shallow bowls, set up your breading station:
    • Bowl 1: Place the flour and a pinch of salt and pepper.
    • Bowl 2: Beat the eggs until well combined.
    • Bowl 3: Add the breadcrumbs.

3. Bread the Fish:

  • Dredge each fish strip in the flour, shaking off the excess.
  • Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Finally, coat the fish in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat for all fish strips.

4. Heat the Oil:

  • In a large skillet or frying pan, heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. You can test if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of bread into it; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

5. Fry the Fish Fingers:

  • Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, add the breaded fish fingers to the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. The fish should flake easily with a fork when done.

6. Drain and Serve:

  • Once cooked, transfer the fish fingers to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with a little salt while they’re still hot.
  • Serve with your choice of dipping sauces, such as tartar sauce, ketchup, or a lemon wedge.

Tips:

  • Baking Option: If you prefer a healthier version, you can bake the fish fingers. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and place the breaded fish on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly spray with cooking oil and bake for about 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Spices and Herbs: Feel free to experiment with spices and herbs in the breadcrumbs for added flavor, such as dried parsley, oregano, or Italian seasoning.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the uncooked breaded fish fingers. Just layer them on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Cook from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

Enjoy your homemade Fish Fingers! They make a fantastic meal or snack and are great for dipping.
