A mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail that is refreshing and typically enjoyed in warm weather. It’s made with the following ingredients:
- White rum: The base spirit of the drink, providing a light and clean flavor.
- Fresh mint leaves: These are muddled to release their essential oils and add a fresh, herbal aroma and flavor.
- Lime juice: Adds a tart and citrusy note to the drink.
- Sugar: Often in the form of simple syrup or granulated sugar, to sweeten the cocktail.
- Soda water: Adds a bit of effervescence and lightness.
Here’s a basic recipe to make a mojito:
Ingredients:
- 10 fresh mint leaves
- 1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
- 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1 1/2 ounces white rum
- 1/2 cup soda water
Instructions:
- Muddle the mint and lime: Place the mint leaves and one lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture.
- Add ice: Fill the glass almost to the top with ice.
- Pour in the rum: Add the white rum over the ice.
- Add soda water: Fill the glass with soda water and stir. Taste, and add more sugar if desired.
- Garnish and serve: Garnish with the remaining lime wedge and a sprig of mint.
Enjoy your refreshing mojito!
