Blackened Shrimp Recipe
Blackened shrimp is a flavorful dish made by coating shrimp in a mix of spices and then cooking them at high heat until charred and aromatic. This dish is perfect for tacos, salads, or served on its own with a dipping sauce.
Ingredients:
For the Blackened Spice Blend:
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Shrimp:
- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- Make the Spice Blend:
- In a small bowl, combine all the spices to make the blackened spice blend. Mix well.
- Prepare the Shrimp:
- Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the spices adhere better and creates a better sear.
- Coat the Shrimp:
- In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with the olive oil or melted butter until well coated. Then, sprinkle the blackened spice blend over the shrimp and toss until evenly coated.
- Heat the Pan:
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy frying pan over medium-high heat. Allow it to get very hot before adding the shrimp.
- Cook the Shrimp:
- Once the skillet is hot, add the seasoned shrimp in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding the pan; you may need to cook in batches.
- Cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on one side until they develop a charred, blackened crust. Flip the shrimp and cook for another 1-2 minutes until they are opaque and cooked through.
- Serve:
- Remove the shrimp from the skillet and serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the top.
