Baked French Toast

Baked French Toast is a delicious and convenient twist on the classic French toast. Here’s a recipe to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter, for greasing the baking dish
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the bread: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter. Arrange the bread slices in the dish in a single layer, slightly overlapping.
  2. Make the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream (or half-and-half), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Soak the bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure all the bread is coated. Press down gently on the bread to help it absorb the custard. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  4. Bake the French toast: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish and bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
  5. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.

Tips:

  • You can customize your baked French toast by adding a layer of sliced fruits (such as berries or bananas) between the bread slices before pouring the custard.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days and reheated in the microwave or oven.

This recipe makes a perfect breakfast or brunch dish that’s both comforting and indulgent.
