Turkey Bolognese
This Turkey Bolognese is a healthier twist on the classic Italian meat sauce. It’s packed with flavor, easy to make, and perfect for pasta or as a filling for lasagna.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium carrot, finely chopped
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 1 pound ground turkey (preferably lean)
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes (or diced tomatoes)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional, can substitute with broth)
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- Fresh parsley or basil, for garnish
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Instructions:
1. Heat the oil:
- In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
2. Sauté the vegetables:
- Add the onion, carrot, and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
3. Brown the turkey:
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground turkey. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 5-6 minutes. Make sure to cook until the turkey is no longer pink.
4. Add the liquids:
- Stir in the red wine (if using) and let it simmer for a couple of minutes to reduce slightly. Then add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and broth.
5. Season the sauce:
- Add the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
6. Simmer:
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer you let it simmer, the better the flavors will meld. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a bit more broth or water.
7. Serve:
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve the Turkey Bolognese over your favorite pasta, zucchini noodles, or use it as a filling for lasagna. Top with fresh parsley or basil and grated Parmesan cheese.
Tips:
- Make Ahead: This sauce can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
- Vegetable Boost: Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers for added nutrition and flavor.
- Pasta Pairing: This sauce pairs well with spaghetti, penne, or even whole wheat pasta for a healthier option.
Enjoy your delicious Turkey Bolognese as a hearty meal that’s both satisfying and nutritious!
