Unstuffed Shells Recipe

Unstuffed shells offer all the deliciousness of classic stuffed pasta but in a simpler, quicker form. This dish combines the comforting flavors of marinara sauce, creamy cheese, and tender pasta in one pot!

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces large pasta shells
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (plus more for topping)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cook the Pasta:

  • In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta shells according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

2. Brown the Meat:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.

3. Add Onion and Garlic:

  • Add the diced onion to the skillet with the meat and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

4. Combine Ingredients:

  • Add the marinara sauce, ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir until well combined.

5. Mix in the Pasta:

  • Gently fold in the cooked pasta shells, ensuring they are evenly coated with the sauce and cheese mixture.

6. Bake (Optional):

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and sprinkle additional mozzarella cheese on top. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.

7. Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips:

  • Customization: Feel free to add vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, or bell peppers to the meat mixture for added nutrition.
  • Cheese Options: Try using cottage cheese in place of ricotta for a lighter option.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Unstuffed shells are a delicious, satisfying meal that’s perfect for weeknight dinners or family gatherings! Enjoy!
