Homemade Corn Tortillas Recipe

Homemade Corn Tortillas Recipe

Making your own corn tortillas is easier than you might think! They are fresh, delicious, and perfect for tacos, enchiladas, or simply enjoying with a bit of butter. Here’s a simple recipe to make about 12 tortillas.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (more or less as needed)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing with your hands until a dough forms. It should be soft and pliable, not sticky. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water; if it’s too wet, add a bit more masa harina.
  2. Divide the Dough:
    • Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball. Cover with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out.
  3. Prepare to Flatten:
    • Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. If you have a tortilla press, great! If not, you can use a heavy plate or a rolling pin.
  4. Flatten the Tortillas:
    • Place a ball of dough between two pieces of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Use a tortilla press or a rolling pin to flatten it into a thin, round tortilla (about 6 inches in diameter).
  5. Cook the Tortillas:
    • Carefully peel the tortilla off the parchment and place it on the hot skillet. Cook for about 30 seconds on each side, or until it starts to puff and develop light brown spots. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  6. Keep Warm:
    • As you cook the tortillas, stack them in a tortilla warmer or wrap them in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm.
  7. Serve:
    • Enjoy your homemade corn tortillas with your favorite fillings, such as meats, beans, cheese, or vegetables!

Tips:

  • Storage: If you have leftovers, let them cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat in a skillet before serving.
  • Flavor Variations: You can add herbs or spices to the dough for added flavor, such as garlic powder, cumin, or chili powder.
  • Gluten-Free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free as it uses masa harina made from corn.

Enjoy your fresh homemade corn tortillas!
